Why My Heart Is Purple

written by Matthew Sims; edited by Carol Quaintance

  • 2000

This book brings to life the firsthand account of Matthew Sims who earned three Purple Hearts while serving as Combat Medic “Doc Sims.” He lived through the Iraq and Afghanistan battlefields answering cries that few have ever heard, the call that rings out when a Soldier, Marine, Sailor, or Airman is hit—“MEDIC!” It also tells the story of a unique group of Americans whose job it is to save others' lives while risking their own. They often have to make a split-second decision to either leave their protected position and scramble to the side of the casualty or wait until the small-arms fire subsides. The 219 medical personnel profiled in this book all paid the ultimate price in the performance of their duty from 2001 to 2008 in Iraq and Afghanistan. We must not allow ourselves to forget the sacrifices these American heroes made in supporting their fellow service members. (178pp. full-color illus. Masthof Press, 2024.)

This is an incredible book, It takes you from tears to triumph. The hero of this book is Matthew Sims, a combat medic, His keen writing conjures up scenes from the series "Band of Brothers". Iraq and Afghanistan what was it really like? These names we read in the news. Doc's story is chilling, yet you come to understand the true role of a warrior and healer. A special story though serious will have you laughing and will reveal the reality of the meaning of the cause, Freedom isn't free, Doc's story is unforgettable. You will want to share it. The second section is sacred! Sims researched 219 combat medics that made the ultimate sacrifice. on those battlefields. Does the book need a sequel? The American public is responding. Those 219 medics are being brought alive on A WALL OF HONOR. This is so touching a testament to the true motivation and character of Matthew Sims.. Honor and valor come alive in this book!

It takes you from tears to triumph! It makes you understand the role of a combat medic is Warrior and Healer . Matthew Sims bears his soul,. It reminded me of "Band of Brothers". I believe it needed to be brought to the American public. Doc Sims knows how to bring a story to life. It takes a special breed of person in war to scramble to the aid of a wounded brother, or wait till it is safe, For 219 combat medics in Iraq and Afghanistan it was the last choice they ever made, Our hero who earned three purple hearts because he cared deeply for America and his service to his men, We need a sequel to this book. W,hat has happened in Doc's life since this book has published , I hear it has moved people and those 219 will never be forgotton , Doc has brought them alive on a Wall of Honor. Cherish them, freedom is not free, Matt proves that over and over in this telling book.
