A Pilgrim's Journey #1: Remembering My Amish Roots

Lee H. Kanagy

  • 1200

Born on an Amish farm in the beautiful "Big Valley" of Central Pennsylvania, the author tells his memories of his childhood, as the 7th of 14 children. His pilgrimage led to wider horizons while working in Iowa, then attending Hesston College and Bible School in Kansas. During WWII he did alternative service as a conscientious objector then continued his education at Goshen College in Indiana. Attempting to pass on the Christian faith from one generation to another, he tells his story of God's faithfulness. (185pp. illus. Author, 2006.)

Also available A Pilgrim's Journey #2 (item #3506).

Lee Kanagy's books were recommended to me by some Mennonites in Hutchinson, KS, when they found out I was interested in mission work to Japan. In Pilgrims Journey II, Mr. Kanagy decided for himself, in the interest of showing a unified witness to the Japanese with other missionaries of various denominations, to discard feet washing, the head veiling and even allowing for divorce and remarriage. He specifically states this in his own book. After 15 years in Japan with his wife Adella and now the Mennonite churches in Hokkaido are indistinguishable from any protestant church. I was shocked to visit the churches there in 2023 and discover the dismal spiritual condition of the "Mennonite" congregation.
