Joseph Shirk applied his exceptional mechanical and inventive skills to agricultural and domestic life in the nineteenth century. His knowledge of astronomy, surveying, and botany was acquired with little formal education. He was a farmer, carpenter, surveyor, printer, and manufacturer of various agricultural and domestic tools. This book provides a detailed account of his life and images of all available artifacts. As a resident of Ontario and often travelled to United States and met a lot of Shirks and they often referred to Inventor Joe. So when I discovered there is a book published about him, I appreciated reading about him. Hard to imagine one man capable of doing so many things.

Very interesting book about my ancestor. This book parallels the chapter about Joseph Shirk in a book from the 1940's titled Annals of the Conestoga Valley in Lancaster, Berks, and Chester Counties, Pennsylvania.
