Scary Times Holy Times by Herb and Sarah Myers is a book that weaves a beautiful tapestry of love, suffering, the resilience of the human spirit, faith, and community. The story describes the ups and downs of health crises. Sarah’s was Lymphoma and Herb’s was an anterior fibrillation of his heart. Both authors share their experiences, the physical aspects, and interior journeys. I appreciate their vulnerable sharing of the emotional and spiritual upheavals they experienced, as often comes with health challenges. Their loving commitment to each other was deeply touching. Cancer memoirs usually share the perspective of the one going through the illness; I appreciated hearing Herb’s perspective as the supportive, often anguished spouse. I also loved their shared faith and doubts. Beautifully sprinkled throughout their writings were poems by Herb, and other poems and quotes that inspired them along their path to healing. I heartily recommend this book!
