Very good reading
I am enjoying the entertaining and amusing stories. I am also learning new PA Dutch words and I find the English version of the story very helpful to translate an unknown word.

By editing and translating Lloyd A. Moll's "Schtimme aus'm Kaerrichof ", Douglas Madenford has performed a great service to American Literature, Pennsylvania Dutch studies, and popular entertainment. Like the book's characters, who lie buried in a Pennsylvania Churchyard, Lloyd Moll's sketches and stories lay buried in a newspaper archive before Doug Madenford used his translation magic, his native knowledge of Pennsylvania Dutch, and his sense of humor to bring Mall's stories back to life.
Schtimme aus'm Kaerrichof (Voices from the Church Yard), is a Pennsylvania Dutch prose Spoon River Anthology written in the 1940's that allows the dead to tell their stories, rich in human psychology, pathos, and humor. Doug Madenford's translations open these stories to the modern reader, whether fluent in Pennsylvania Dutch or not. For the fluent reader, the translations act as an aid helping us with unfamiliar words or expressions. However, for the non-Dutch reader, his translations open the door to a rich vein of American literature that would otherwise be unreachable. Either way, Schtimme aus'm Kaerrichof, is a great read and an even a better re-read!
