The Comprehensive Pennsylvania German Dictionary, Vol. One: A

edited by C. Richard Beam and Joshua R. Brown

This long-awaited encyclopedia dictionary has been compiled and edited for the past 50 years! This first volume covers words in the dialect from A to Ayyel including pages of terms, definitions, and important contextual sentences. An invaluable introduction covers pronunciation, orthography, the history of Pa. German lexicography, etc. Using not only existing dictionaries as the basis (Lambert, Hower, Kyger), this volume has been developed and added to by many speakers of the dialect both in the U.S. and Canada. Literary sources (plays, prose, poetry, newspaper columns) also appear. (161pp. hardcover. Center for Pa. German Studies, 2004.)

A wonderful dictionary set. Unless you look at dictionaries for more than the occasional word, you have no idea what treasures you are missing.

When i received these I picked up one volume at random and flipped through it encountering stories, mythology and the word for the skin that forms atop boiled milk.

Amazing scholarly work contained in well constructed books. Does not disappoint.
