  • 1000

Part of Mennonite Central Committee’s service and mission program was PAX, of which the author dedicated two years of his life to, from 1961-1963, by serving in the Congo. Traveling to Africa via an ocean freighter, the author relates his voyage and subsequent landing on the African continent, as well as his time spent there. How would he survive a completely different land, culture, and language? What would he accomplish in his two years before he had to leave? (109pp. color illus. Masthof Press, 2021.)

Go on an adventure to the Congo
Larry Landis leaves his all white Mennonite Community and boards a ship to "Dark Africa".
Go with him on this two year experience and relive the journey with him. He receives and distributes food and medicine to mission stations. The roads are muddy, armed checkpoints stop him and he experiences the poverty of African villages. Larry interacts with missionaries of many denominations which broadens his church wide appreciation of them. Enjoy this trip to the Congo!

A Trip to Congo with a (then) young man.
While Larry Landis had made the decision to give two years of his young life to serve somewhere in the name of Christ, he wasn't aware at first just where that would be.

While the Congo might not have been his first choice, there is no doubt this young fellow didn't "back away" and shipped out to the Congo. Those years were life changing for Larry and you will be "with him" in his adventures in Congo...sometimes holding your breath with him in some "trying experiences" in Congo mud and sand....wondering if they were ever "getting out."

The highlight perhaps was when his own father decided to go and see for himself where his son had been, and those days we are happy to see
his days of winding down his time in Congo.

This reviewer would highly recommend this book and you will be passing it on to others as i plan to do.
