Davey Applebutter

Rachel E. Yoder

  • 1000

For over 10 generations the Pennsylvania Dutch have been farming and caring for the land of southeastern Pennsylvania so it is only natural that Davey Applebutter takes you on a fun visit to his Grandpop's farm! Translated by Douglas J. Madenford into Pennsylvania Dutch, one side is in English and when you flip the book over—the other side is in Deitsch! A great introduction to the Pennsylvania Dutch language for children and adults alike. (44pp. full-color illus. Masthof Press, 2018.)

Charming and instructive!
This children's book is as charming as it is instructive. Being bilingual adds to the educational appeal. A perfect resource to teach about Pennsylvania Dutch culture and conversation starter about different cultural backgrounds and family heritage. Bravo!

book review
Rachel Yoder’s illustrations are visually complex through her use of patterned fabric backgrounds, superimposed photos and spontaneous freehand drawings. Ms. Yoder’s drawings are charmingly deceptive in their simplicity and irresistibly engaging to readers of all ages.
