Rabbit Warrior: A Cape Cod Pilgrimage of Healing and Self-Discovery - Janet Brady Calhoun

Rabbit Warrior: A Cape Cod Pilgrimage of Healing and Self-Discovery

Janet Brady Calhoun

Rabbit Warrior is a captivating memoir of a transformative journey of renewal and discovery. Disoriented by intense mourning over the loss of both her mother and sister within a short time span, the author found consolation and reconciliation on a pilgrimage of solace to her beloved Cape Cod home.

Emotionally overwhelmed, Janet turned inward for personal healing and wholeness. As she quietly contemplated the meaning of life and death, the Cape’s wildlife became a voice for inspiration and revelation. Horseshoe crabs, lobsters, a great blue heron, and rabbits “spoke” to her of life: change and evolution, pain and suffering, death and dying. Supported on her journey by daily journal writing that exposed persons, places and memories stored deep within, she unmasked falsehoods, gave up protective “magical thinking,” and examined relationships in an effort to live a more authentic life.

Writers and fellow soul-searching travelers helped Janet dispel guilt, expunge destructive messages and peel away emotional layers accumulated over decades. As she traversed her soul, Janet resolved to move ever deeper towards her core, her spiritual center. A summer that began with overwhelming sorrow mixed with angry confusion, ended with transformative feelings of enlightenment, forgiveness, love and rebirth.

Janet hopes that both her memoir, as well as her summer reading list, will provide a template for other Rabbit Warriors who might wish to undertake their own liberating journey as well. (310pp. Masthof Press, 2016.)

Lighting up those dark places
"This book is an inspiration to anyone who has demons from the past, lurking inside, and wants to confront them. While spending a summer alone in Cape Cod, Janet Calhoun opens up painfully, dark places within her and works laboriously to understand and neutralize them. The book demonstrates the power of time spent alone and the need for family patience, love and courage during such soul searching."

Bravo!
A profound journey of self discovery beautifully written with a flow of conscience that invites the reader into the complexities of growing up, dealing with accumulated baggage and emerging with an understanding that brings a sense of peace and acceptance. This book is inspirational and written from the heart without pretense inviting the reader to relate directly to many issues that in one way or another affect us all, either as a child or parent, or both. I particularly enjoyed how the author was able to weave her observations of nature into her self discovery in the most beautiful way. I read it from cover to cover and was sorry to see the last page!

That is a wonderful gift given to you by your husband and daughters
• When I began the book I, frankly, was a little worried. My internal thoughts were something along the lines of, “oh no, here goes another person’s documentation of extensive navel-gazing.” I was wrong.
• The success of your book is due, in part, to the commonality of the human condition. Without taking anything from the uniqueness of your family, personal history, and experiences, you nevertheless bring to light issues many of us face. Your journey to potential spiritual solutions help feed reflection and possibilities for the reader.
• I am in awe of you, Phil and your daughters for allowing and being willing to, as you say, stand naked in public. That is a wonderful gift given to you by your husband and daughters. That kind of courage which benefits others is rare today. It requires those of us who read your book the obligation to deeply respect and honor the gift given by you and your family.
• It is clear despite your public thanks to multiple editors that you are a gifted writer who has been honing her craft for some time. Your use of reflection coupled and interspersed with an accounting of events in your history and the description of your summer alone in the Cape kept me engaged. What is next in your writing journey?
Thanks again for inviting me into your world and that of your family. I’m “digesting” and incorporating your insights into my life.

I was sorry to have finished Rabbit Warrior!
The story was told so beautifully and honestly. I could hear The author's voice with every word I read. I loved her metaphors, using nature to describe life and emotions helped to explain complex feelings in such a simple way. Calhoun's journey will inspire many who read Rabbit Warrior and will create a platform for heartfelt discussion. I have great admiration for the author's enormous undertaking. My Cotuit/Cape Cod, Massachusetts bookclub will be reading it in January.
