Witches, Reformation and the Fall: Sowing the Seeds of Dissent, A.D. 1500-1620, Book One

James J. Fritz

  • 2995

Historians have failed to link the upheaval and warfare that the Protestant Reformation caused to the fabric of Christian societies already seeking reform and renewal in the first decades of the 16th century. There were other Roman Catholic Reformers, but none as outspoken as Martin Luther who engaged in vilification of the Pope and the hegemonic Roman Catholic Church. This demonization of Pope and church created a culture of dissent that still lingers in our society. While it was true that the Church needed reform and had become corrupt, the change needed to come from within. This work chronicles the events and the impact of the Protestant Reformation in all of the major European countries and to some extent in America. After reading this work, the reader will have a better understanding of why we have a modern culture of dissent and celebration of individual rights. Moderation and reaching accord with our opponents is something that is disappearing. Chapters include: Witchcraft in the Western World; The Holy Roman Empire & The Papal States; The Protestant Reformation; and The Protestant Reformation in Spain and Switzerland. I find the book enchanting. So well documented, It takes me back to my college days. I did private study with a brilliant Catholic Priest and Herbert Benson MD at Harvard who studied with the Dali Lama, Truly I have sat at the feet of masters longing to know all that their minds hold. This author is like them, learned in many disciplines, It brings historical data to answer ageless questions of culture, The age-old question of good and evil; the personification of evil into witches, It delves deeply into the rise of Christianity, its betrayal and confusion of truth, and like I told my priest,"They threw out the baby with the bath water:" Rather than fix from within they allowed a schism. The insights into Martin Luther and where that led to change rulers, countries, and open the door to vast change in culture is so well stated. I can't wait for Book 2. Be prepared to take a journey at the feet of a master. It will surprise, educate, and make you question.....so this is how that happened? chapter by chapter.
