Haunted by World War II

Herwig G. Schutzler

  • 2000

Written by one of the last East Prussians to settle in the United States, this autobiography is the true story of just one European refugee who survived World War II. Imagine being a young child and having to leave your childhood home with what you could carry to escape the advance of the Russian Army. Run along with him as he escapes East Germany into West Germany and how he learns to survive on very little. Becoming a cartographer, marrying the love of his life, and eventually traveling the world are just part of his story as an immigrant in the United States. You will be touched by his story of personal fortitude and it is his wish that others will learn from it and help make the world a better place. (238pp. color illus. Masthof Press, 2020.)

Enlightening Read
I recently finished this book by Herwig Schutzler. It is an enlightening and enjoyable read. Interesting perspective of a refugee and immigrant and his opinions of life today in his country, The United States.

Remarkable!
What a great book!! I read a lot but could hardly put this one down and our book group studied it and many felt the same way. It covered a part of history that not much has been written about and unbelievable personal challenges by the author and his wife.

True story of survival and perseverance
I am privileged to personally know this gentleman, and so happy that see that his story is being told! It is a tale of survival and perseverance in this most difficult of times in world history. Yet there is little historical record of folks in post-war Germany known to Western readers. This story of Herwig's plight and how he and his wife overcame the difficult challenges of life in East Prussia and a divided Germany is critically important to a more complete understanding of this time in history.
