Lessons from the Mirror: 500 Years of Anabaptism

J. Ross Baughman

  • 2000

To mark the 500th anniversary of Anabaptism, all of the engravings by Jan Luyken that illustrated the Martyrs Mirror have been carefully gathered and beautifully published in one unforgettable edition. The original portfolio of 104 images gain support from 11 more of his etchings on the same theme that are seldom seen. Deeper context and thought-provoking questions come from introductory essays by Mary Sprunger, professor of history at Eastern Mennonite University, and J. Ross Baughman, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and educator. (254pp. illus. Masthof Press, 2024.)

Lessons from the mirror

This is a very informative and sobering book about what our Anabaptist endured for their beliefs. Do we still have that courage to defend our beliefs? I am going to donate this to our church library.

Lessons from the MIrror is an Amazing Resource

So complete and beautifully illustrated. I have several old copies of Martys Mirror printed in the 1800’s that are mainly text and only have a few pages of the engravings. This new Lessons from the Mirror gives a concise historical context of the Mirror by Mary S. Sprunger and then provides full page engravings with a short story explaining the illustration. A real treasure.
