Lord of the Abbey

Lois Kulp

  • 1700

The handsome heir, the runaway bride, and the abandoned waif all converge on Six Chimneys Abbey the same wild, stormy day. The heir comes for the reading of the will, the runaway bride as a companion to the sister of the deceased man, and the little waif? No one seems to know who she is or why she is there. But all three stay—first because of the storm that changes to a blizzard and finally because they all have a reason to stay. But when the abandoned groom discovers the location of his intended, drastic measures must be taken and the runaway bride must make a quick, frightening decision. (435pp. Masthof Press, 2019.)

The past comes face to face with the present.
The reader can relate to this story about traveling to a new environment and leaving the past behind to try to start a new life. The story demonstrates that even if one builds barriers to the emotions, relationships and actions of the past, the barriers will eventually crumble with time and one is forced to confront them in their new life. This author's writing style is easy to follow and leaves you wanting to keep turning pages to see what happens next. Having read three of her novels, I plan to read more of her stories in the future.

Strong character-driven romance
I loved this book. The story unfolds with a very positive (and Christian) slant, with the strong male heir the orphan girl calls "Sir" pitted against the demure yet strong-centered Johanna. Johanna and (her romantic interest!!) face the real challenges of communication and past grievances. I loved the building romantic tension between Johanna Barton and (...no spoiler reveal here!). This is a delightful romance set in the nooks and crannies of an old Abbey, with characters that are complex, nuanced and really engaging. I look forward to the author's next tale story.
