The Radio Adventures of Asseba and Sabina (“Doh Wil Ich Awer!”)

Gregory J. Hanson

  • 3000

Many older people in the Pennsylvania Dutch region remember stopping whatever they were doing on Sunday afternoons in the 1940s and 50s to turn on their radio and listen for the latest adventures of Asseba and Sabina, a Pennsylvania Dutch farm couple. Asseba tends to play practical jokes on his wife, who is a hard worker with high expectations. This book contains scripts of the show in both PA Dutch and English, along with some fun illustrations and background information on how all of it got started. As you read these scripts, enjoy them for their humor and philosophy in everyday life and appreciate the culture of the Pennsylvania Germans. (217pp. color illus. PA German Cultural Heritage Center, 2019.)

My father had us listen to Asseba and Sabina at Sunday lunch after church. Listening to the program and listening to my grandparents converse with family and friends in Pennsylvania Dutch has given me a remarkable knowledge of the language that I did not cultivate as a younger person. This book brings wonderful insight into Lutheran and Reformed Pennsylvania Dutch culture and language. The photos and folk illustrations help to complete the story. Thank you for producing it.

Most entertaining.
The book evokes memories of my youth and life. I am a proud Pennsylvania Dutchman, reading this book transports one back in time of growing up and living with the language of choice at the time.
Many hours of pleasure are to be had from time spent with this book.
