Thomas Rutter I (c1660-1730) of Germantown, Pennsylvania, and the Birth of the Pennsylvania Iron Industry

Daniel A. Graham

  • 2100

Thomas Rutter was an English Quaker and blacksmith who immigrated to Philadelphia in 1684. In 1714, he traveled up the Schuylkill River to Manatawny Creek and built Pennsylvania's first ironwork, a bloomery forge. Five years later, he converted his forge to a refinery forge and built Colebrook Dale Furnace, Pennsylvania's first cold blast furnace. When he blew the spark of life into it, the vast iron and steel industry of Pennsylvania was born. (232pp. color illus. index. Friends of Hopewell Furnace, 2021.)

Daniel A. Graham has written the definitive book on his subject matter. His writing is masterful: crisp, clear and he has covered all the conceivable bases. The research and sourcing for his conclusions are notable and reliable. His readers can be sure of what they read from Graham. Bravo!

Thomas Rutter I
Dan Graham, the leading authority on Pennsylvania's colonial iron industry and many of the leading iron proudcing families of that periord, has produced another excellent work. This study of Thomas Rutter I, the founder of the Pennsylvania colonial iron industry, is written in Dan's clear prose and is based in part on hitherto unknown material that he has discovered. His ability to find new sources while living in a remote northern tier Pennsylvania County is astounding and, of itself, would be a valuable book.

Interesting and Well Researched History
Mr. Graham's book is a well written and interesting history of the beginnings of the Pennsylvania iron industry. The book is thoroughly researched; I particularly enjoyed places where the author was faced with conflicting data (dates and order of birth, property ownership, etc) and was able to resolve these issues. The book itself is lovely and the illustrations are wonderful and aid in understanding the material. I think this book will become the definitive work on the subject.
